Start with the question you want answered, using the groups above. If you are tired, ferritin, folate and vitamin D together is the usual starting point. If you are not sure, ask the pharmacist or call Summertown on 01865 558 348 – advice is free and we will not sell you a test you do not need.
Completely. The test is done in our consultation room, the result is given to you alone, and nothing is said at the counter. A positive result means contacting your GP or self-referring to a midwife; we can also talk through contraception, which is always free at MediPill.
The analyser is a professional point-of-care device, and for these tests a finger-prick result is a reliable screening measure. It is not identical to a hospital laboratory result, so any result that is out of range or would change your treatment is confirmed with a lab test through your GP. We will never tell you a number is a diagnosis.
GPs will usually take a point-of-care result as a reason to arrange their own laboratory test rather than treat from it directly. That is how it should work. We give you a printed result and, where needed, a letter that makes the GP’s next step easy.
The pharmacist will explain what the number does and does not mean, what might have affected it (a recent cold, a supplement, the time of day) and whether it needs following up. If it does, you leave with a GP letter. A result that needs urgent attention is acted on the same day.
