What is NHS Pharmacy First?

NHS Pharmacy First is a same-day NHS service from your community pharmacy. The pharmacist can assess, advise and (where needed) prescribe for seven common conditions – without you needing a GP appointment. Launched nationally in 2024 and delivered by qualified pharmacists in private consultation rooms.

Who is it for?

Anyone with one of the seven covered conditions and registered with an NHS GP. Some conditions have age ranges (children, women 16–64, etc.). Bring photo ID or proof of address if you have it.

What happens at the appointment?

A brief eligibility check (~2 minutes), then a private 10–15 minute consultation. The pharmacist examines you if needed, gives advice, and either issues an NHS prescription, recommends over-the-counter treatment, or refers you on. Notes go to your GP the same day.

Common questions, answered.

Do I need to book?

Walk-in is welcome at any of our four branches. Booking guarantees a slot in our private consultation room without waiting.

Will I get a prescription?

If clinically appropriate, the pharmacist can issue an NHS prescription on the spot. The usual NHS prescription charge applies unless you are exempt – the consultation itself is always free. We may also recommend over-the-counter treatment or self-care advice.

Is this on my NHS record?

Yes – your consultation, advice and any medication issued are sent to your GP electronically via the NHS Pharmacy First network.

Which branch can I visit?

All four Oxford branches offer Pharmacy First. Pharmacist availability varies by branch – booking confirms a slot with a named pharmacist.

What if I don’t qualify?

If you fall outside the NHS criteria we can usually still help via a paid private consultation, or signpost you to the right NHS pathway.

Will my GP know about the visit?

Yes – the outcome of every Pharmacy First consultation is shared with your GP the same day via the NHS Pharmacy network.

Is a chest infection covered by Pharmacy First?

No. Pharmacy First covers seven conditions – sinusitis, sore throat, earache, infected insect bites, impetigo, shingles and urinary tract infections in women – and a chest infection is not one of them. Contact your GP, or NHS 111 if you need help sooner. Call 999 if you are struggling to breathe.

Is tonsillitis covered by Pharmacy First?

Yes, as a sore throat, for anyone aged 5 and over. Your pharmacist checks your symptoms and, if a bacterial infection is likely, can give you treatment on the NHS; if not, they will recommend things that ease the pain, such as lozenges or throat sprays.
