Transmission

Yellow fever spreads via the bite of Aedes and Haemagogus mosquitoes that are active during daytime hours. Repellent, long sleeves and accommodation with screens reduce exposure, but vaccination is the only reliable defence.

Geography

Endemic across tropical sub-Saharan Africa (the “yellow fever belt”) and the Amazon basin in South America. Most countries inside these zones require an International Certificate of Vaccination (ICVP) at the border – including some non-endemic countries if you have transited through a risk country.

Immunity

A single dose now confers lifelong protection for nearly everyone aged 9 months and over, in line with WHO guidance. The certificate becomes valid 10 days after vaccination.

Symptoms to watch for

Seven signs of yellow fever exposure.

If you develop any of these within 3–6 days of return from an endemic region, contact NHS 111 or your GP straight away – mention recent travel and yellow fever exposure.

Sudden high fever

Onset 3–6 days post-bite. Often severe and abrupt.

Severe headache

Persistent, often with photophobia and confusion.

Muscle & joint pain

Body-wide aches, particularly in the back and limbs.

Nausea & vomiting

Loss of appetite and abdominal discomfort.

Extreme fatigue

Profound weakness limiting daily activity.

Jaundice

Yellow skin / eyes in ~15% - the severe phase marker.

Bleeding

Internal bleeding in severe cases - medical emergency.

Eligibility checklist

You should book a Yellow Fever vaccine if…

  • You are travelling to tropical sub-Saharan Africa (the yellow-fever belt).
  • You are travelling to the Amazon basin or tropical South America.
  • Your destination (or a stop-over) requires an ICVP at the border.
  • You are a frequent traveller to endemic regions - one dose, lifelong cover.
  • You are aged 9 months or older with no listed contraindications.
Not suitable for children under 9 months, during pregnancy, with severe egg allergy, immunocompromised states or thymus disorders. Our pharmacist screens for contraindications before vaccinating.

Common questions, answered.

At least 10 days before departure – the ICVP only becomes valid 10 days after vaccination. We recommend booking 4–6 weeks ahead so we can plan around any other travel vaccines you need.
No. WHO and most countries now accept a single dose as lifelong protection. A small handful of countries still occasionally request a 10-yearly booster – we’ll let you know on the day.
The vaccine itself, a NaTHNaC-trained pharmacist consultation, and your stamped ICVP certificate – issued on the day, no extra fees.
All four Oxford branches stock the vaccine. Botley and Summertown are our busiest travel clinics; Headington and Deddington are typically by appointment.
