Why it matters

What HPV is - and what the vaccine prevents

HPV is a very common virus passed on through skin-to-skin and sexual contact. Most people clear it without harm, but some high-risk types can, years later, lead to cancer. Gardasil 9 protects against nine HPV types (6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52 and 58) - the types responsible for the large majority of HPV-related disease.

Cervical cancer

HPV types 16 and 18 alone cause around 70% of cervical cancers. Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to reduce that risk.

Other cancers

HPV is also linked to anal, penile, vulval, vaginal and some head-and-neck (mouth and throat) cancers, in both men and women.

Genital warts

Types 6 and 11 cause about 90% of genital warts. Gardasil 9 protects against both.

HPV-related cancers affect men and women. The vaccine is recommended and licensed for both.

Is it for you?

Common questions

Is this the same vaccine the NHS uses?
Yes. We use Gardasil 9, the nine-type HPV vaccine used in the UK NHS programme.
How many doses will I need?
Most people under 25 with a healthy immune system need a single dose. People aged 25 to 45 usually need two doses (the second 6–24 months after the first), and those who are immunosuppressed or living with HIV need three. Your pharmacist confirms your schedule at your consultation.
Is it safe?
HPV vaccines have an excellent safety record, with many millions of doses given. The most common effects are temporary soreness at the injection site and a mild headache. Your pharmacist reviews your history before vaccinating.
Who cannot have it?
The vaccine is for ages 9 to 45. You should not have it if you have already completed a full HPV course, have had a severe allergic reaction to a previous dose or any ingredient, or are pregnant. Tell your pharmacist if you are unwell on the day - suitability is always assessed at your consultation.
Does the vaccine treat an existing HPV infection?
No. The vaccine prevents infection with the HPV types it covers; it does not treat an infection you already have. It can still be worthwhile, as it protects against types you have not yet encountered.
