Clinical brief · RSV vaccine

What the vaccine does, and what it doesn’t.

It protects against respiratory syncytial virus, which causes colds in most people but can lead to pneumonia and hospital stays in older adults. It doesn’t cover flu or COVID, so keep those jabs too.

Who it’s for

Adults 60 and over, especially those with a lung, heart or kidney condition, diabetes or a weakened immune system.

How it’s given

One injection in the upper arm. One dose protects for at least two winters, and no booster is recommended. Book it on a different day from your flu jab, as the two work better apart.

Side effects

A sore arm, tiredness, a headache or aching muscles for a day or two are common and pass quickly. Rarely, a nerve condition causing weakness or tingling has been reported, so tell a doctor straight away if that happens.

Had an RSV jab before?

One dose is all you need. If you’ve had an RSV vaccine before, you don’t need another, so tell your pharmacist.

RSV vaccine FAQ

Common questions, answered.

Adults 60 and over. It helps most if you have a lung, heart or kidney condition, diabetes or a weakened immune system, but any adult over 60 can have it. We don’t give it in pregnancy; ask your midwife from 28 weeks.

Just one. It protects for at least two winters, and no booster is recommended.

Better not. For older adults the two work best on separate days, so we’ll book them apart. COVID and pneumonia jabs are fine at the same visit.

The pharmacist consultation and one dose of the vaccine.

A common winter virus. For most people it’s a cold, but in older adults and babies it can cause pneumonia and bronchiolitis, and thousands are admitted to hospital each year.
