Typhoid Vaccine
Typhoid - endemic across South Asia, Africa & Latin America. Indicative map - risk varies by region and season; we check current country advice at your appointment.

Transmission

Typhoid spreads through food and water contaminated with Salmonella Typhi bacteria – typically in regions where sanitation is limited. Risk is highest with unfiltered tap water, ice cubes, raw salads and shellfish.

Geography

Endemic across the Indian Subcontinent (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal), sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia and parts of Latin America. India alone reports ~3M cases per year – vaccination is advised for travel to high-risk areas, especially for longer stays, visiting friends and family, or where food and water hygiene may be poor. We assess your itinerary at the consultation.

Immunity

A single injection protects from about 14 days after vaccination and lasts about 3 years. Boosters are needed every 3 years for ongoing exposure. The vaccine does not protect against paratyphoid.

Symptoms to watch for

Symptoms of typhoid fever.

If you develop these within 1–3 weeks of return from an endemic region, contact NHS 111 – mention recent travel.

Sustained high fever

Steady 39–40°C lasting 1–2 weeks.

Severe headache

Often with mental confusion.

Loss of appetite

With abdominal pain and bloating.

Profound fatigue

Often bedridden in severe cases.

Rose-coloured spots

~30% develop pink rash on the trunk.

Intestinal bleeding

Severe complication if untreated.

Slow pulse

Relative bradycardia despite fever.

You should book Typhoid vaccine if…

  • You are travelling to the Indian Subcontinent (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal).
  • You are travelling to sub-Saharan Africa or Southeast Asia.
  • You will be staying for a longer period or visiting friends & family.
  • You are travelling to rural areas with limited sanitation infrastructure.
  • You are aged 2 years or older with no listed contraindications.
Not suitable for children under 2 years (injection) or under 5 years (oral capsules). The oral capsules are also not suitable if you have a weakened immune system. Severe allergy to a previous dose excludes. Not given during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
