| Result | What it usually means | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Below 25 nmol/L | Deficient | A daily supplement is advised; we will suggest a dose and when to recheck. |
| 25 to 50 nmol/L | May be too low for some people | A standard daily supplement (10 micrograms) usually brings this up over the winter. |
| Above 50 nmol/L | Adequate for most people | No action needed beyond the NHS advice to consider 10 micrograms a day from October to March. |

Within your appointment. The pharmacist explains it in our consultation room and you leave with a printed or emailed copy.
For most adults the NHS advice is a 10 microgram daily supplement from October to March, and you do not need a test to do that. A test is useful if you want to know whether you are actually low, whether a higher dose is needed, or whether a supplement has worked.
The pharmacist will recommend a higher loading dose and suggest a repeat test in about three months. If your level is very low with symptoms, we give you a letter for your GP.
