What the vaccine does, and what it doesn’t.

It protects against 20 types of pneumococcal bacteria, the most common cause of bacterial pneumonia. It doesn’t stop colds, flu or viral pneumonia, so it works best alongside your flu jab.

Who it’s for

Adults 18 and over who want protection, especially smokers and people aged 50 to 64.

How it’s given

One injection in the upper arm. Most people need just one dose and no booster. You can have it at the same visit as your flu or COVID jab.

Side effects

A sore, red or swollen arm for a day or two is common. Some people feel tired or achy, or get a headache or a mild temperature. These pass quickly.

Had a pneumonia jab before?

Tell your pharmacist which one and when. If you had one in the last year, you may need to wait, and if you’ve already had this type, you won’t need it again.

Signs of pneumonia.

Pneumonia often follows a cold or flu. See a GP or call NHS 111 if you’re not getting better, and call 999 for the red signs. Tap a card for what to do.
