What the test measures

What Blood pregnancy test tells you.

Human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) is produced once a fertilised egg implants, about six days after fertilisation, and rises quickly in early pregnancy. A blood test detects it at lower levels than a home urine test, so it can confirm a pregnancy slightly earlier or settle a faint or unclear urine result.

Understanding your result

What your result looks like, and what it means.

Your printed and emailed result shows your value on a traffic-light bar like this, with a plain-English line and your next step.
Below 5
5 to 25
Above 25
Not pregnant
Borderline – repeat in 48 h
Consistent with pregnancy
ResultWhat it usually meansWhat we do
Below 5 mIU/mLNot pregnantIf your period is still late in 48 hours, repeat the test – very early pregnancies can read negative.
5 to 25 mIU/mLBorderlineRepeat in 48 hours. A rising level is consistent with early pregnancy.
Above 25 mIU/mLConsistent with pregnancyContact your GP or self-refer to a midwife. We can give you the self-referral details.
These bands are the usual UK guide; your printed result shows the exact reference range the analyser uses. Some healthy people fall just outside a range, and one reading is a snapshot. The pharmacist reads your result with your history, and anything that needs confirming goes to your GP with a letter.
Blood pregnancy test FAQ

Common questions, answered.

Completely. The test is done in our consultation room, the result is given to you alone, and nothing is said at the counter.

From a few days before your period is due. The earlier you test, the more likely a very early pregnancy reads low or negative, so a negative result with a late period should be repeated in 48 hours.

Fertility treatment containing hCG can give a false positive. Tell us if you are having treatment.

We talk through your next steps, which usually means self-referring to a midwife or contacting your GP. If you need to talk about options or contraception, our pharmacists can do that too – contraception is always free at MediPill.

The level of hCG, the hormone produced once a fertilised egg has implanted. Above 25 mIU/mL is consistent with pregnancy, 5 to 25 is borderline and worth repeating in 48 hours, and below 5 is a negative result.

Seven days after unprotected sex is too early for any test, because hCG only appears after implantation. The blood test is reliable from a few days before your period is due. If it is negative and your period is still late, repeat it after 48 hours.

GPs normally use a urine test, which is all most people need. Blood hCG tests are used by early pregnancy units when a level needs tracking. Ours is for people who want an earlier or clearer answer, in private, today.
