Started three days before your period is due, it holds back the hormonal trigger for menstruation – ideal for holidays, weddings, exams or competitions. Period delay, answered.

Three days before your period is due, three times a day. You stop taking it when you no longer need the delay, and your period usually arrives within a few days.
Up to 17 days when taken as directed. Your pharmacist will talk you through the timing for your specific trip or event at the consultation.
Nausea, breast tenderness, mood changes and bloating are the most common. They’re usually mild and stop when the medication stops.
For most people, yes, as a short, occasional course. They are not suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have ever had a blood clot, have certain heart or circulation conditions, use hormonal contraception or HRT, or have taken a course to delay a period in the last six months – which is why your pharmacist checks your medical history first. Stop taking them and get help straight away if you notice signs of a clot, such as chest pain, sudden breathlessness or a painful, swollen leg.
Same-day appointments are usually available, but it’s best to allow a few days before your trip or event so you can start the medication in good time – three days before your period is due. Planning around a holiday or event? read our guide to delaying your period.

They are not a contraceptive, so you can still get pregnant while you are taking them – use condoms or another method during the course. Once you stop, your period usually starts within three days and your normal cycle carries on. If your period does not come after you finish the course, take a pregnancy test.
