Transmission

Chikungunya is an alphavirus spread by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes that bite during daytime hours. Repellent, long sleeves and accommodation with screens reduce exposure.

Geography

Outbreaks across the Caribbean, Central and South America, sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia and Indian Ocean islands. Major recent outbreaks have included Réunion, Brazil and Paraguay. Risk is highest in rainy season.

Immunity

A single dose of IXCHIQ (live-attenuated) gives strong protection from around 28 days post-injection. Long-term durability is being studied — current data suggest persistent immunity, but boosters may be recommended in future.

Symptoms to watch for

Symptoms of chikungunya.

Onset 4–8 days after a bite. The name means “to walk bent over” in the Kimakonde language — describing the disabling joint pain.

Sudden high fever

Often 39°C or higher.

Severe joint pain

Symmetrical, often disabling.

Headache

With muscle aches.

Rash

~50% of cases — maculopapular.

Nausea

With vomiting in some cases.

Persistent fatigue

Can last weeks to months.

Chronic arthritis

In ~30–40% — months to years.

  • You are an adult aged 18 years or older.
Not licensed for under-18s. Severe allergy to vaccine components excludes. Pregnancy: defer where possible due to live-attenuated nature. Immunocompromised travellers — discuss with pharmacist.
