Transmission

Neisseria meningitidis bacteria spread through respiratory droplets and close contact – coughing, sneezing, kissing, and sharing utensils in crowded conditions like dormitories or pilgrimage gatherings.

Geography

MenB is the dominant meningococcal strain in the UK and Europe, with infants and 15–24-year-olds at highest risk. Sporadic outbreaks occur in university dormitories worldwide. Less common in the sub-Saharan “meningitis belt” (which is mostly serogroups A and W).

Immunity

Two doses of MenB (4CMenB) recombinant protein vaccine, at least 4 weeks apart. Protection develops 1–2 weeks after dose 2. No routine booster is needed for healthy adults after completing the 2-dose course.

Symptoms to watch for

Symptoms of meningococcal disease.

Onset is rapid – hours to a few days. Seek urgent medical care if these appear after travel or close-contact exposure.

With cold hands and feet.

Severe headache

With neck stiffness.

Photophobia

Painful sensitivity to light.

Nausea & vomiting

With confusion.

Pinpoint rash

Glass-test non-blanching purpura.

Eligibility checklist

You should book MenB vaccine if…

  • You are starting university and moving into halls of residence - close-living conditions are the main MenB risk in the UK.
  • You are travelling to a region with an active MenB outbreak (check NaTHNaC TravelHealthPro for current alerts).
  • You are a backpacker or gap-year traveller staying in dormitories, hostels, or shared accommodation.
  • You are a university student joining halls of residence.
  • You are aged 2 months or older - MenB is licensed from infancy through adulthood.
Severe allergy to a previous dose excludes. Pregnancy and breastfeeding don’t exclude where exposure risk is real. Mild illness – defer by a few days.

Common questions, answered.

Plan for at least 6 weeks total: the first dose ideally 6 weeks before exposure, the second dose 4 weeks after that. You are well-protected 1–2 weeks after dose 2.
No routine booster is recommended for healthy adults after completing the 2-dose course. Speak to your pharmacist if you have ongoing high-risk exposure (e.g. laboratory workers handling meningococcal cultures).
Each dose includes the vaccine itself, pharmacist consultation, and aftercare advice. The 2-dose course total is £260.
All four Oxford branches stock the MenB vaccine. Same-day vaccination is usually possible – no ICVP needed.
Severe allergy to a previous dose. Pregnancy doesn’t exclude where exposure risk is real.
The MenB vaccine is more reactogenic than other meningitis vaccines: arm soreness, redness and tenderness are common (24–48 hours). Fever is common, especially in young children – paracetamol can help. Serious reactions are very rare.
