Transmission

Hepatitis A is a viral liver infection picked up from contaminated food, water and ice — particularly in regions with limited sanitation. Raw shellfish, unfiltered tap water, ice cubes and uncooked salads are typical sources.

Geography

Endemic across most of Africa, Asia, Latin America and parts of Eastern Europe. The illness is rarely fatal but routinely puts travellers in bed for 2–6 weeks — long enough to wreck a trip.

Immunity

A single dose gives strong protection from around 14 days post-injection, lasting 6–12 months. A booster at 6–12 months extends cover to roughly 25 years.

Symptoms to watch for

Symptoms of Hepatitis A.

Onset 15–50 days after exposure. Contact NHS 111 if symptoms appear after recent travel.

Fever

Often the first sign, before jaundice.

Profound fatigue

Persistent for weeks even after fever lifts.

Loss of appetite

With nausea and vomiting.

Jaundice

Yellow skin and eyes — peaks 1–2 weeks in.

Dark urine

Tea-coloured — sign of liver involvement.

Pale stools

Bilirubin disruption in the liver.

Abdominal pain

Right upper quadrant tenderness.

Eligibility checklist

You should book Hepatitis A vaccine if…

  • You are travelling to most of Africa, Asia or Latin America — including short trips and resorts.
  • You are travelling to parts of Eastern Europe with limited sanitation.
  • You are visiting friends & family in an endemic region.
  • You are involved in aid, medical or expedition work abroad.
  • You are aged 12 months or older.
Not suitable for severe allergy to previous Hep A dose. Mild illness with fever — defer by a few days. Pregnancy and breastfeeding don’t exclude where exposure risk is high.

At least 14 days before departure for peak protection — though the vaccine starts working within days. Partial cover plus food and water hygiene is much better than going unvaccinated.
Not for short-term cover (6–12 months). For long-term cover up to 25 years, come back for a booster between 6 and 12 months after your first dose. We send SMS reminders.
